Narrative

Twenty-two rooms terraced down a granite shore, each with its own step to the water.

Bornholm's northern coast is granite, not sand, and the hotel treats the rock as its foundation, its material and its argument. Rooms are stepped in three terraces that follow the shore's fall, so that no room is above another and every one has an uninterrupted horizon.

The palette is deliberately narrow: local granite, sand-cast concrete, oiled oak, and brass that the salt air will turn green within a decade. The restaurant sits at the lowest terrace, half a metre above the high-water mark, with a floor that is washed by storm tides twice or three times a winter. This was a decision, not an accident.

The hotel opened in the spring of 2024 and closes each January to let the building rest.
